This dram is the fifteenth of 2022’s Christmas Countdown! Whiskies from previous years can be found here.

Every year, I look at the advent calendar offerings that pop up across the pond and think that it would be super cool to do something like that (it is actually the inspiration for my review spree in December). Turns out, I wasn’t the only one who wanted to do one so between /u/federalagents, /u/DangerousDoorknob, and I we put our own together! This is the fourteenth dram of the calendar. It was reviewed partially blind as in I know the whiskies in the calendar but not the order.

Nose: It is nice and fruity from the start. There is a nice mix of sweet, slightly tart, and slightly bitter fruit notes. Grapefruit, navel oranges, and assorted apples stood out the most. With a little bit more time in the glass, some passion fruit and other tropical fruit notes came out. Some toasted coconut shavings make their way in as well.

Palate: The first sip is like biting into a grapefruit slice. You get a lot of notes that remind me of sweet-tart grapefruit with a little bit of the bitterness from the peel and a little bit of waxiness from the little membrane bits. After the initial onrush of citrus notes comes a bit of vegetal funk with lemongrass and celery coming to mind. Adding a little bit of water brings out a sweetened chrysanthemum tea that took me back to my undergraduate days when one of my roommates loved and always had some Vita chrysanthemum tea boxes around.

Finish: Medium to short in length. Notes of lemongrass and that sweetened chrysanthemum tea are the most prominent here.

Guess: Scotland. Malt. Lowland. 20-24 Year. Ex-Bourbon. 60-65%.

Conclusion: There is very little I love more in a whisky than something that gives you layers of flavors to pick out and also takes you on a trip down memory lane. This Dailuaine does it for me. The nose teases that you are about to embark on a trip to Willy Wonka’s Fruit Factory and for a second, it seems to deliver on that promise. Then you start to dig in and get notes that go off in various directions which just make it a ton of fun to pick through. The notes of chrysanthemum tea sent me back to my sophomore year dorm room where my roommate would be playing ARMA II and drinking boxes of Vita tea while I’d be playing Football Manager and trying to do homework at the same time. Definitely a really fun whisky, trip down memory lane included, and one I’m very glad to have tried.

Final Score: 91.
