Nose: The ex-wine cask maturation shines right away. You get a really nice nutty red wine note. There’s some marzipan along with dried cherries and raisins.

Palate: It is quite a bit bubblegum-esque, just like Hubba Bubba if it wasn’t super sugary. There’s a bit of cherry and a bit of red wine that also comes through along with the bubblegum. With water, you get a little bit of potpourri to go along as well with notes of dried orange slices/peels.

Finish: Medium-short in length. The whisky shows a bit of its age here. It’s a bit ethanol-y and a bit bitter. It certainly isn’t overpowering or unpleasant, but it is noticeable. A bit of fruit comes through as well giving it an almost cherry liqueur/kirsch-like characteristic.

Conclusion: A funny quirk of living in the Western Midwest is that we seem to have oddly good access to certain world whiskies. Japanese and Indian whiskies seem to pop up all the time here, sometimes even before they appear in larger markets like California. This bottling is one such case, when I picked up this bottle at the end of 2021, the only thing Google could turn up about it was an article in an Indian newspaper about it. I’ve sat on this whisky for a long time but it appears that I should not have been. It is quite tasty with an unexpected level of complexity along with a lot more wine cask influence than I might have thought it would have. If it weren’t for a bit of astringency in the finish, this would have been really top quality stuff. Even with it though, it does punch nicely above its weight.

Final Score: 79.
